Biography:
Tom Brand was born and raised in Indianapolis, but moved north to Chicago in the late 40's to study art at the School of the Art Institute on the GI Bill. When he established residence again in Indiana in 1995 by moving to the Pines, he devoted himself to his painting and began adding to his already prodigious body of finished work. The largest exhibition of his work occurred in Indiana in 1993, when 57 of his paintings filled the galleries of the Northwest Indiana Arts Center in Muenster. All of his work is executed with oil on wood panel, a medium that the artist uses exclusively. He uses a centuries-old technique to express forms in a modern idiom. These are rewarding paintings to experience with a built-in promise that brings the viewer back to look again and again. In their complexity, they are full of references and imagery that reward the viewer.
