Biography:
Laurel Izard grew up in Northern Illinois and received her BA in Art and Anthropology from Northern Illinois University and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While living in Chicago she and her husband, Edwin Shelton, established Izwin inc., a ceramic studio business producing whimsical jewelry and table top items. Izwin products have been sold in galleries, stores and museums around the country. Since 2004 Laurel has been teaching workshops for adults, as well as various school and after school programs. Presently she is the art teacher at Marquette Catholic High School.
Laurel’s current work consists of painted or drawn handmade papers collaged on painted canvas. Each work starts with a quote from a well known mystic or spiritual teacher, which has been translated into one of the ancient scripts she has researched. Subsequent layers of collaged paper are drawn or painted on and then chosen for their impact as shapes, colors and/or subject matter in a way that will have the most impact within the composition.
