Biography:
Photography allows Rich Manalis to celebrate life by capturing the beauty inherent in both natural and man-made objects. He attempts to photograph objects from unique perspectives, thereby presenting fresh, pleasing, and often challenging views of his subjects. Using the computer, Manalis sometimes changes an image into an abstract or partially abstract one. Many of his images show structural details that usually are not seen by the casual observer: macro-photography can reveal the natural symmetry of flowers and leaves and the intricate details of surface topology (texture) of many different objects.
Manalis has spent most of his work-life as a biology professor, specializing in animal physiology and neurobiology. He retired in May of 2001 as an Emeritus Professor of Biology, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Currently he is a Visiting Professor of Biology at Goshen College where he “works” part-time in order to continue his life-long interest in physiology.
He became more involved in photography about twelve years ago when he took a series of still-lifes in Santa Fe with his macro lens. He first exhibited his work at Art Link in Fort Wayne. Since then, he has become an award-winning photographer, exhibiting his work in many galleries throughout northern Indiana as well as in Ohio and Michigan. His show CHICAGO PHOTOGRAPHS at Purdue North Central has received much publicity on the internet and was the basis of a full-page article in the Post-Tribune newspaper (1/10/2010).
Presently, Manalis serves as president of the Area Artists Association of the Lubeznik Center for the Arts.
