Biography:
I
do black-and-white photography. I think it is more
profound and abstract than color. Printing is an
important, challenging part of the process. Photos
are archival. In the last several years I have been
sepia toning some of my photos, notably the ones of
entire locomotives and tractors, lending them an
antique “feeling.”
One of my subjects is antique farm machinery. My
photos of it say something about an era of primitive
technology and naked, unshielded power and force.
My other favorite subject is railroad locomotives
and artifacts. In 1979, I saw my first steam
railroad excursion. A steam locomotive gives an
incredible impression: the earth shakes as it
passes, and it is unbelievably noisy with the urgent
blast of the whistle and the deafening roar of the
mechanical parts. Besides noise at the painful
level, the “magic” of steam is that the moving parts
are exposed, so one can see everything.
