LUBEZNIK CENTER PRESENTS EXHIBIT-RELATED EVENTS

Detail from “Rabbi in the Desert” by Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer

The Lubeznik Center for the Arts presents several simultaneous exhibitions featuring artwork by contemporary folk, intuitive and visionary artists through February 16. Due to poor weather conditions on the original December 16 opening date, the Artist Reception has been rescheduled to January 13 from noon to 3:00 pm. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Gain a better understanding of outsider art and artists through exhibit-related programs at the Lubeznik Center. During the Reception on January 13 the Arient family will present a gallery talk and tour at 12:30 pm followed by a gallery talk by Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer at 2:00 pm. Learn about famed outsider artist Henry Darger in the film “In the Realm of the Unreal” to be shown in the LCA galleries on January 15 at 7:30 pm and on January 20 at 2:00 pm. On January 24 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm join us for the Artist Reception for "Artwork by Opportunity Enterprises consumers".

The outsider artist has historically been viewed as someone both untrained and often disconnected with reality. “Contemporary American Folk Art: The Arient Family Collection”, curated by David Sokol, will “examine a number of contemporary American artists and asks us to sort out the meaning and relevance of the terms: folk, self-taught, outsider, naive.” This exhibit, on display in the Hyndman Gallery, is sponsored in part by Harris, NA and Konrady Plastics, Inc.

“Works on Paper and Parchment by Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer” will be on display on the Brincka Gallery through February 16. Goldhamer, a Rabbi with a 30 year history in the Chicago area, began painting in 1989. His works, often painted on goatskin parchment, focus heavily on biblical, apocalyptic and kabalistic themes. Also during this time, in the West Lobby, “Indiana Visionaries” will feature works from Artistic Spirit Gallery in Indianapolis. Artwork by consumers of
Michiana Resources will be on display

in the NIPSCO Art Education Studios through January 13 and artwork by consumers of Opportunity Enterprises will be on display in the same area between January 16 and February 16. Both of these organizations provide services for developmentally delayed adults within the community.
