About Merge Music - Three musicians of differing and
similar musical experiences and backgrounds have come
together to form the musical phenomenon called “Merge”.
Together their repertoire encompasses all sorts of music
styles that include jazz, cabaret, rhythm and blues,
classical, rock, folk, ethnic music and storytelling. The
three musicians individually and collectively have played
professionally around Chicago-land and the Tri-state area
for all types of social events, holidays and occasions.
Merge has a new website at SoundofMerge.com that will soon
be posting music performance clips and other music links.
Stay tuned!
Dennis Brittain has been doing music all his life. He
began singing in choirs at a very early age
and sings |
with
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Community Chorus.
He has been a vocal teacher for over 15 years, and
also teaches many of the instruments he plays.
Besides his formidable tenor, Dennis plays
keyboards, all types of flutes including Irish
flute and whistles, guitar, mandolin, harp,
mountain dulcimer, concertina, and dabbles in
brass instruments just to round things off. He is
comfortable with many forms of music from
classical through folk pop & jazz.
Debra Sawyer plays the Celtic harp trained in
classical and folk traditions. She includes voice,
guitar and storytelling in her repertoire. In
September 2007, with her small lap harp, Debra
toured the West and North Coasts of Ireland with
double-harpist Linda Khandro playing in local
sessions, pubs, tourist attractions, street events
and ancient stone circles. Debra currently is
being certified as a Clinical Music Practitioner
for hospice and hospital. She loves playing across
genres with Merge and especially enjoys
improvising blues and jazz on the harp.
Mitch Gregory first came to the United States in
the late 1980s reportedly as a stowaway on a ship
from a remote island somewhere in the Black Sea,
his only possession an old mandolin he had
inherited from his grandmother. As a youth he
spent several years in the New York jazz and blues
scene where he learned to play guitar. Working
with other musicians earned Mitch the nickname
“Shapeshifter’ because he adapts to almost any
musical style with precision, and eloquence. He
brings to Merge a strong rhythmic sense, great
skill at improvisation, and a love of complex
harmony and subtle chords. When asked where this
music comes from Mitch says, "It's in your ears,
in your fingertips, and in your soul. The trinity
of musical creation." Mitch is also a member of
the improvisational jazz trio Evil Genius, the
ElectricFish blues band, and the gypsy carnival
group Pipe Dream. He owns and operates
ElectricFishProductions producing and engineering
recordings for other music performers.
