The Lubeznik
Center for the Arts and the Tryon Farm Institute present
the Green Day Celebration at Tryon Farm on April 20 from
10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Green Day is designed to appeal to
everyone from architects, conservationists, naturalists
and families. The “rain-or-shine” event will be filled
with fun and educational eco-friendly activities for all
ages.
The Green Day Celebration House Walk will provide a
special opportunity to tour ten environmentally friendly
homes at Tryon Farm. Architects will be available to
answer questions about the green elements and special
features of the homes. Cost is $35 for advance purchases
before April 16 at 5:00pm. Tickets purchased after this
time or at the event are $40. Lubeznik Center and Tryon
Farm Institute members receive a $5 discount. Advanced
Tickets may be purchased at the Lubeznik Center, by
calling 219-874-4900 or at
www.lubeznikcenter.org, and will be held for
pick-up at the admission table by the Tryon Farm barn on
the day of the Walk.

Green Day Educational Programs
In addition, visitors may attend workshops on
various topics at a cost of $5 per person for each
program:
• 11:00am - 12:00pm, Native Plants and Landscaping
Workshop. JF New Ecological Associates will
provide a presentation on native plants and ways
to incorporate them into a landscaping plan.
• 12:15 - 1:15 pm, Shirley Heinz Land Trust - Wild
Flowers. Kris Krouse & Paul Quinlan of the Shirley
Heinze Land Trust will present common, rare and
endangered species in a beautiful slide
presentation.
• 1:30 - 2:30 pm, Tryon Farm: Community &
Conservation. Join Scott Kuchta, of Edward Noonan
& Associates, for an overview of the Tryon Farm
project and a discussion on the challenges and
rewards of developing housing with an emphasis on
community and conservation.
While grown-ups attend workshops or the House
Walk, fun and engaging children’s activities will
focus on composting with worms, creating a nature
journal, and a habitat hunt. Cost is $5 per child
for the entire day and includes snacks:
• 10:00am-12:00pm, Vermicomposting. Join Nicole
and Noelle in learning about Red Wigglers and how
they help the soil and provide great nutrients for
your garden!
• 12:00pm-12:30pm, Lunch/Snacks
• 12:45pm-2:00pm, Make your own Nature Journal.
Use “found” materials, and some supplied, to
construct and decorate your own nature journal.
• 2:00pm-3:00pm, Habitat Hunt. Kids will become
explorers as they arm themselves with magnifying
lenses, binoculars and notepads and look for
various types of habitat around Tryon Farm.

Green Day Celebration activities are co-sponsored
by the: Tryon Farm Institute, Shirley Heinze Land
Trust, JF New Ecological Consultants and LaPorte
County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Exhibit-Related Programs at the Lubeznik
Center
The Green Day Celebration is the culminating
event of the “Green Architecture” exhibit featured
in the Lubeznik Center’s Hyndman Gallery through
April 20. The exhibit provides a look at the ways
local architects have integrated environmentally
friendly concepts into their designs. “Green”
Architecture is design of spaces and places in
full consideration of the natural environment; it
seeks to maximize efficiency and minimize impact
while meeting the needs of its occupants. Exhibit
Sponsors: Edward Noonan (Developer,
Architect/Tryon Farms), Tryon Farms Institute and
WNIT Public Television.
Other programs related to the “Green Architecture”
exhibit, separate from the Green Day Celebration,
are ongoing at the Lubeznik Center located at 101
W. 2nd St. in Michigan City, IN. All are welcome!
A $3 donation is suggested for each program and
LCA members are admitted free:
March 29 from 1:30 – 3:00
• This Old Green House. Discover small changes
which can make a big difference in your pocketbook
and for the environment through energy
conservation with Matthew Kubik, an architect and
assistant professor of Interior Design. Also, Mike
Zeive will introduce earth friendly paints for the
home.
April 6 from 1:30 – 3:00
• Green and FUN. Through this creative hands-on
workshop, children will learn important concepts
about our environment and sustainable design in a
fun way. Participants will develop, design and
build a model of their own “green” city.
April 8 at 7:00pm
• Earth Works Imagined: A Brainstorming Session.
Generate ideas for environmentally important
projects for this community with artist and public
art specialist Deborah Landry.
