Put some sizzle in your summer by enrolling in one of the many educational art opportunities available at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. If a multiple week commitment does not fit into your busy schedule, attend one of the workshops for adults including Stained Glass 101; Wood Fire Pottery: Hand Building and Wheel Throwing with ceramic artist Jon Hook; flower arranging with designer Anneke Dekker; a spiritual awakening discussion group with Susan Block; purchasing made easy on “ebay”; and two public art workshops with Deborah Landry, one focused on managing a public art project and the other on environmental art.

Mark your calendars for ClickArt Summer Camp for children ages 6-11. The Camp runs between July 21 and August 1, with pricing options to accommodate busy summer schedules. This year’s theme will tie in with our summer exhibit “Photography Now” and will give kids a chance to experiment with photography as well as drawing and collage.

ClickArt Summer Camp (2 wks (M-F)

The summer art camp at the Lubeznik Center will focus on the exhibit "Photography Now". The camp will introduce a variety of photographic approaches. Students will use a digital camera to take pictures, then use the resulting images to create drawings and collages. Learn composition and color and explore photography through self portraits, landscapes, traditional and abstract themes. Students may bring their own camera, or use a shared camera.

Creative Dramatics (5 wks)
Is your child seeking the stage and a spotlight? This class provides the fundamentals for children ages 7-9 who show an interest in dramatic expression. The class focuses on exercises to engage the imagination while establishing basic tools for acting.

World of Watercolor (beginning) (12 wk)
The magical medium of watercolor will be explored with Neil Kienitz, an experienced instructor and professional artist. Get an overview of materials and techniques. Learn how to produce and control translucent layers of color. More experienced students will join on the fifth week. Students provide their materials after the first class.

Improv Level I (6 wks)
Whether you're the joker on the sales floor or the wallflower at the party, the fundamentals of improvisation will improve your communication skills, help you rediscover your creativity and imagination, stimulate collaboration with others, and develop the ability to quickly consider the right thing to say in any situation. Simply said, improvisation is acting without a script---it’s getting out of the box! Treat yourself to a first rate class with truly experienced instructor who has been on the Chicago improv scene for a decade.

Students focus on proper improvisational scene building techniques. Expect exposure to more fun and brain-twisting exercises. Gain a clear understanding of the basics of improv scenic structure, learn interesting ways to develop new characters, and have a place to sharpen techniques introduced in our “Improv Level I” class. Students will be given the opportunity to perform in scenes as well as observe others while being made extremely comfortable learning these golden improv traits in your teacher’s positive, safe and encouraging environment.

Adult Scene Study (5 wk)
Adults will develop and refine stage acting skills as they work with pre-selected scenes and monologues from contemporary playwrights. Memorization will not be necessary, as we will be using the scripts to learn about the art of acting and stagecraft. Students are welcome and encouraged to select and bring along scenes or monologues of their choice to work on during class.

Hatha Yoga (8 wks)
Round out your week with hatha yoga. Students with prior yoga experience will practice methods to promote a calm state of mind and body. Reduce tension and improve strength, flexibility and respiration with yoga practices focused on alignment and injury prevention. Focus on yoga positions and breath awareness with a basic introduction to yoga theory. Students should provide a firm blanket and any props they might have. Depending on class size mats, blocks and straps may be available. Wear comfortable clothing that allows full range of motion. The Art of Painting Furniture (4 wks)
Embellished furnishings can liven up your home and office and can make wonderful personal gifts. Express your personality through the functional media of painted furniture. This class will cover furniture preparation (sanding and priming), and the use of color (color theory, patterns) and finishing. Students will provide supplies: 1 small to medium piece of furniture, a sheet of medium grade sandpaper, 1 roll of blue painter's tape, assorted brushes (chip, foam, small round). Paint with what you have at home (acrylic, latex, spray, etc.). Craig Carey created his Neo Folk Art style many years ago after college. His colorful, whimsical objects and furniture have been sold in finer department stores and craft galleries throughout the country.

Wood Fire Pottery: Hand Building and Wheel Throwing
This two-weekend workshop involves hand building and beginning wheel throwing with clay. This is a very basic class that introduces basic clay processes. Wood firing is an incredible process using wood to fuel the kiln that creates amazing surfaces. The wood fired kiln is not only a tool but will be used as a medium. In the 1st weekend this class will make work and in the 2nd weekend we will glaze, load and fire a small single chamber wood kiln. Class fee includes all materials (clay, glaze, firing expenses).

Floral Interpretations Workshop
All year long and throughout your home, flowers lift our spirits, make rooms look more welcoming and enhance any occasion. Flower arranging is easy, very satisfying and can be done by anyone. It does not mean just sticking a bunch of flowers in a vase. It means being creative and free and exploring your artistic ability. In this workshop we are going to create arrangements with spring flowers, exotic flowers, leaves and branches. Materials and cut flowers will be provided, but do bring 2 containers of different shape (tall and low, or round and rectangular or anything that could work as a container). Flowers and other materials will be provided.

Earth Works Imagined
The term "Earthworks" refers to art created in nature that uses natural materials such as stones, leaves, soil etc. Artist and public art specialist Deborah Landry will provide a brief photo history of earthworks created by a variety of artists. Additionally Landry will include photos of sites which could potentially be developed as sites for Earthworks within the community. Brainstorm with the group to discuss projects that you would find environmentally important in the area. Landry hopes to generate interest and facilitate a new Earthworks project in this area. Individuals, artists, environmentalists, environmental and community agencies are invited to attend - All are welcome!

A NEW EARTH: Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose
Join an open discussion series on the consciousness-raising book that is impacting an international audience through Oprah’s book club and online class. You’re invited to share your comments, questions and insights with others on the path to the spiritual awakenings that deepen and enrich your life. The pre-requisite is the reading of the book. The facilitator, Susan Block, has been a student and explorer into consciousness-raising and transformational work for three decades. She has created and led workshops in the areas of personal growth, living with abundance and goal setting. Her favorite word is “yes.’

Public Art Demystified
This workshop is designed for artists, art administrators and agencies looking to develop public art projects. During this one day workshop, artist and public art specialist Deborah Landry will present the following elements: Looking at the possibilities, making a vision happen, creating a public art master plan that is also part of a city master plan, achieving your objectives, writing calls for artists, obtaining quality applicants, writing proposals, developing budgets, working with the community and exploring materials that last. Landry is the recipient of numerous awards and was the first to be accepted to the Fulton County Public Arts Mentor program in 2005. She attended a five week Public Arts residency at the School for Visual Arts in New York. With artist Helen Helwig in 2007, Landry designed and fabricated a 60 foot ceramic mosaic mural for the Boundary Waters Aquatic Center and multiple ceramic mosaic murals for the Fairburn Senior Center in Georgia. Stained Glass 101 (2 wks)
Stained glass, as an art form, reached its height in the Middle Ages when it became a major pictorial form and was used to illustrate the narratives of the Bible. A lot has changed since then, but the ancient technique remains much the same today. Learn the basic principle of creating stained glass art. Participants will develop a theme, translate a drawing from paper into shapes, which will be transferred to glass, cut, and assemble glass pieces with lead. Tools and materials are included. Brady Squires and Bill Boscaccy are self taught stain glass artists who live in Beverly Shores, IN.
