THE LUBEZNIK CENTER CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY

An Operatic performance of Black History and Valantine’s Day Romantic songs are the dual focus of soprano Maria Karmra-Hagemeyer accompanied by pianist Rebecca McLaren-Barnes. The performance on February 17 at 7:00 pm (CST) at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts at 101 W. 2nd St. in Michigan City, IN. Members will be admitted free and there will be a $3 donation for non-members.

The audience will hear songs by world renowned composers such as Gershwin as well as lesser known artists like Richard Hundley from Ohio. Hundley is regarded as one of the great “art song” composers, creating pieces specifically for piano and voice intended to be performed in an intimate setting, such as the Lubeznik Center.

Celebrate Black History through the performance of songs by the late Margaret Bonds, the first African American soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Maria Kamara-Hagemeyer, who lives with her family in LaPorte, IN, attended Western Michigan University for her Bachelor of Music degree and Indiana University for her Masters of Music. Upon graduation she was chosen to study on scholarship at the American Institute of Musical

Studies in Graz, Austria. She is a past winner of the Regional Leontyne Price Competition and was a talent award recipient at the Miss America Pageant. She has sung in several classical and modern operas with companies such as Opera Grand Rapids and Cincinnati Opera while also appearing as a soloist in various concerts and recitals.
