June 16, 2020 Activity: How to Contour Draw

Join teaching artist Jessica Sexton in learning the art of contour drawing. Contour drawing is when you draw with one continuous line while observing the contours of the object you're drawing. Grab and object, paper and pen, then get to drawing!

May 29, 2020 Activity: Make a Mondrian Inspired Bookmark

We're back with another fun art activity for you and your family. Make a Mondrian inspired bookmark! Piet Mondrian is a Dutch artist who is well known for his colorful abstract paintings. Abstract art uses color, shapes and textures to represent objects or ideas. Mondrian started out painting in a style of realistic landscapes but over time grew to love painting in a simplified abstract way. His signature style featured black geometric lines and spaces filled with white and primary colors. This style influenced many later artists and can be seen in lots of other designs, from furniture to fashion. This project was produced in partnership with Safe Harbor

March 30, 2020 Activity: How to Create an "Exquisite Corpse" with Friends

Using colored markers, LCA teaching artist Jessica Sexton will show you how to doodle an exquisite corpse with your friends and family.

What is an "exquisite corpse?" It's a collaborative drawing project invented by artists of the Surrealist art movement and still used by contemporary artists, including the Chicago Imagists. We created exquisite corpses as the interpretive project for school learning tours during our "The Chicago Imagists: Before and After" exhibit.
