Area
youth participating in ecological learning through art are:
-
visiting the Indiana Dunes to get actual dune sand
between their fingers (and in their shoes)
-
taking a closer look at creatures living in lake, dune
and wetland areas
-
discovering how the teeny tiny microscopic animals as
well as large mammals are part of a much larger food
chain – by eliminating even one small organism, many
other animals may be affected.

About the
Great Lakes Summer Eco-Art

|
Great
Lakes Summer Eco-Art project (GLSEA)
is using a curriculum developed by the
Alliance for the
Great Lakes. The age-appropriate “Great
Lakes In My World” curriculum has been adapted to
include development of children’s eco-artwork and
personal reflections. An Environmental Instructor and
Art Instructor team guide experiential activities, group
discussions and field trips to the Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore. Art will be used as a hook to anchor
learning of local ecology and environmental issues.

The
GLSEA project is a collaborative venture between the
Lubeznik Center and the
LaPorte County Youth Serving
Agencies Coalition
Coalition
members involved in GLSEA include:

The
Great Lakes Summer Eco-Art is integrated into the
Coalition’s ongoing multi-site camp program. Selected
agencies from the coalition are involved with the GLSEA
program. For six weeks, approximately 450 students are
studying a major issue in their community: lakeshore
ecology of Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes.
Instructors actively engage students in weekly
environmental curriculum lessons. Students are
developing their own Eco-Artwork and reflection
statements as they investigate the ways personal and
community decisions affect the lakeshore. |
 |
GLSEA
encourages youth to engage in critical thinking about local
environmental stewardship. Students are learning about
lakeshore ecology as it impacts Lake Michigan and the
LaPorte County community. By viewing student work at the Art
Festival, parents, family members and the general public
will be able to learn about lakeshore environmental concerns
through the eyes of community youth.
The
Lubeznik Center for the Arts
has an active community outreach component in LaPorte
County, and a history of providing ecology-focused art
experiences to youth and underserved community populations.
During the past three years, the Lubeznik Center has
conducted multiple successful projects, including: Wildly
Wonderful Wingeds Summer Art & Recycling Camp, Faux Fish
Factory, Free Saturday Clay Classes, Lakefront Art Festival
children’s activities, and art classes for incarcerated
teenagers. See out-reach programming
Funding
for Great Lakes Summer Eco-Art was funded by an
Environmental Education grant from the
EPA
