Poetry Slam

First Friday

Readings begin at 5:30 PM with audience members as judges for this raucous and friendly showcase. Admission is free, and all are welcome to cheer on the performers, explore LCA’s art exhibits and enjoy the cash bar and complimentary light refreshments.

This year LCA's poetry slam will have a new format. Marc Kelly Smith, the founder of the Poetry Slam movement, will host the event. The night will begin with an open mic inviting performers of all walks to share their original poetry or perform favorite poems by other authors. Next, audience members will have the chance to become a poet themselves with a fill-in-the-blank poem, themed for the occasion. The slam will conclude with the Dumb Rhyming Word Game, made famous at the Green Mill. The winner of which will be crowned as this year's LCA Poetry Slam Champion.

Poets participating in LCA’s Poetry Slam should prepare poems under three minutes in length for the open mic. Spots have been filled, but interested poets can still be added to the waitlist by emailing jsexton@lubeznikcenter.org, or call 219.874.4900 ext. 107.

Artist Talk with Shirley Guay, Rosalie Koldan and Kelly Daisy

Join us on Sunday, April 7, at 1 PM (Central) for an Artist Talk with exhibiting artists Kelly Daisy, Shirley Guay and Rosalie Koldan! Learn about all the works in their exhibitions, "Collective Perception" and "Collaboration."

Coinciding with Women’s History Month, “Collaboration” is the combined work of Shirley Guay and Rosalie Koldan. Shirley Guay creates abstract realism, combining patterns, colors, and textures, with symbolic images of Black American life, while Rosalie Koldan creates assemblage art influenced by her research into various cultures, and important political, social and environmental issues. Together these two artists align in “Collaboration” as a true testament to their artistic practice and life together.

Kelly Daisy's work in "Collective Perception" explores the dichotomy between society's perception of women and the perceptions they have of themselves through abstract expressionism. Each piece is unique, mirroring the individuality of women.
